Gold Prices Differ from the Market Rate

❓ Question
As-salamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,
Regarding the gold prices shown in the calculator, they appear to be lower than the market rate. Also, the Nisab for each gold karat seems different in the calculator — 21K = 85g, 24K = 75g.
Thank you very much.
Answer

Wa alaykum as-salam wa rahmatullah,
Thank you for reaching out and for your interest.
According to the approved Sharia methodology published on the platform and endorsed by His Eminence Sheikh Mahmoud Abd al-Aziz al-Ani, President of the Council of Iraqi Scholars:
— The gold used to calculate the Nisab is based on the prevalent karat in the country. In Iraq, the prevalent karat is 21K. Therefore, whoever owns wealth equivalent in value to 85 grams of 21-karat gold has reached the Nisab.
— The Iraqi Zakat Calculator applies precise adjustments between different karats. Since the Nisab benchmark is 21K, it is natural that when you enter 24K gold, the Nisab will be reached with less than 85 grams — and conversely, if you enter 18K gold, you will need more than 85 grams to reach the Nisab.
— One of the Sharia standards is that the gold price must be calculated without craftsmanship value (bullion price). Therefore, we rely on international gold exchange prices, which is why they may sometimes differ from local market rates.
— Gold and silver prices in Iraqi Dinars are updated automatically multiple times daily to ensure the difference from the actual market price remains minimal.
May Allah accept from you and us.
